The Enugu State Government has given roadside traders operating along the Abakpa Nike axis seven days to remove their activities from roads and other areas obstructing traffic.
The directive was issued by the state Ministry of Transport as part of measures to improve traffic movement and safety across the busy area.
The Commissioner for Transport, Obi Ozor, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, warning that motorists who drive against traffic would face tougher sanctions, including vehicle impoundment and fines.
Ozor said the ministry had commenced a public awareness campaign covering key locations in the Abakpa Nike area, including Ukwu Aki, Texaco, Nowas, T-Junction and Nkwo.
He explained that the sensitisation exercise was aimed at educating motorists and tricycle operators about the dangers and penalties associated with driving against traffic.
Roadside traders were also informed that they had seven days to vacate roadways and other locations where their activities were causing obstructions.
According to the commissioner, the government is currently prioritising public awareness and voluntary compliance. However, he warned that enforcement and prosecution of violators would begin once the seven-day grace period ends.
Ozor appealed to motorists, traders and residents to support the government’s efforts to improve safety and ease traffic congestion in Abakpa Nike.
He stressed that driving against traffic poses serious risks to road users, urging motorists to remain in their lanes and keep roadways free of obstructions.
The state government’s action is part of its broader efforts to improve traffic management and make major roads within Enugu safer and more accessible.
