Social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has staged a protest at the Nigeria Police Force headquarters in Abuja, demanding an apology from Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Jimoh Moshood.
VDM arrived at the police headquarters with traditional dancers and a live singer, turning the protest into a highly publicised demonstration as he called for accountability over a case involving a man identified as Hameed.
The activist said the protest was prompted by allegations that Hameed was declared wanted in connection with a murder case before, according to VDM’s account, proper investigations had been concluded.
He claimed that a court subsequently cleared the man and directed the police officer involved to apologise.
VDM criticised the delay in issuing the alleged apology and used the protest to raise broader concerns about the treatment of suspects by law enforcement agencies.
According to the activist, declaring individuals wanted without adequate investigation can have serious consequences for their reputation, freedom and livelihood.
He further alleged that the police could potentially frame innocent individuals or plant incriminating items in their vehicles or personal belongings. These claims were presented by VDM during the protest and have not been independently established in the report.
The activist described his action as an attempt to draw attention to Hameed’s case, arguing that the man needed public support in seeking what he considers justice.
Videos from the protest circulated on social media, showing VDM addressing the situation while traditional performers and a singer accompanied him outside the police headquarters.
The unusual nature of the demonstration generated mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians praising VDM for speaking out while others focused on the unconventional style of the protest.
Supporters described the activist as someone willing to take up cases that might otherwise receive limited public attention.
