Buhari’s Body Returns Home, Tinubu Declares 7 Days of Mourning

The body of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, arrived in Nigeria today, Monday, 14, 2025, from London. He passed away on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 82 after battling a long term illness. His remains were flown back to Nigeria with Vice President Kashim Shettima July leading the presidential team.

Buhari will be buried today in his hometown, Daura in Katsina State, according to Islamic customs.

As a mark of respect, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared seven days of national mourning. During this period, all national flags will be flown at half-mast. President Tinubu described Buhari’s death as a great national loss, stating that a special emergency meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) will be held on Tuesday, July 15, to honour the former leader.

The National Assembly has suspended all activities until July 22, 2025, in respect of the late president. Lawmakers have been asked to adjust their plans and attend the burial ceremony.

The leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives offered their deep condolences to Buhari’s family, the government, and the people of Nigeria, especially Katsina State.

Buhari died around 4:30 PM on Sunday in a London hospital, reportedly due to leukaemia, a cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow.

He is remembered for his strong belief in Nigeria’s unity and national integrity. Leaders across the country are mourning his passing, and prayers have been offered for Allah to grant him eternal peace in Aljannatul Firdaus.

President Tinubu also said Buhari will receive full state honours, reflecting his impact and service to the nation.
