Manchester United Take Action Against More Than 1,000 Accounts in Ticket Touting Crackdown

Manchester United have completed an extensive investigation into alleged ticket touting, resulting in bans for 685 accounts and additional sanctions or warnings for hundreds of other supporters.

The club launched the investigation in July following concerns about organised misuse of its ticketing system. The crackdown initially caused anger among sections of the fanbase, with some supporters fearing that their season tickets could be removed without sufficient explanation.

Manchester United later acknowledged that it had underestimated the number of supporters who share account information and admitted that some of its early actions had caused unnecessary distress.

Following a review of the cases, 468 matters were closed without further action after supporters provided satisfactory explanations. Meanwhile, 499 bans were upheld following independent appeals.

The club has defended the investigation, insisting that its primary objective was to target organised groups using large numbers of accounts to obtain and resell tickets for profit rather than punish genuine match-going supporters.

United said the most serious cases involved organised ticketing operations that controlled, sold and distributed tickets through hundreds of different accounts.

As part of its approach, the club has stressed that supporters who have not engaged in ticketing abuse should not be penalised. Tickets recovered through sanctions will instead be made available on an individual-match basis at season-ticket prices.

Manchester United also reiterated that its ticketing policy is intended to protect fair access for genuine supporters, maintain matchday security and prevent the commercial exploitation of tickets.

The issue is not limited to Old Trafford, with other Premier League clubs also taking action against suspected ticket touting.

Manchester City have reportedly banned 165 supporters, while Liverpool have imposed 432 lifetime bans and seized assets linked to their own investigation.

The Manchester United crackdown comes ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby, with supporters' group The 1958 planning a protest against the club’s ownership. Recent ticketing controversies are expected to feature prominently among the concerns raised by fans.
