Governor Soludo Pardons Jailed Anambra Native Doctor Akwa Okuko and Appoints Him Youth Ambassador

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has officially granted a pardon to the well-known native doctor, Chidozie Nwangwu, widely recognized as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki. Alongside this pardon, the governor has appointed him as an ambassador for youth reformation.

Nwangwu was originally arrested the previous year alongside several other traditional practitioners following the implementation of the Anambra State Homeland Security Law. Authorities had charged them over allegations connected to promoting quick wealth, money rituals, and associated practices. Earlier in the year, Nwangwu entered a plea bargain with the state government, resulting in a reduced sentence of 11 months which he began serving at the Nigeria Correctional Centre in Amawbia.

As part of the terms of his rehabilitation and subsequent legal arrangement, he was required to completely renounce his fetish practices, including the infamous 'Oke-ite' rituals, and commit to steering young people away from crime and illicit quick-wealth schemes.

Governor Soludo announced the official pardon under the prerogative of mercy during an operational visit to the correctional facility. Government officials emphasized that the decision highlights a core philosophy of correctional reformation, focusing not only on punitive measures but also on genuine correction, societal restoration, and offering individuals a path toward a renewed purpose.

The Special Adviser to the governor on Youth Reformation, Dr. Nelson Omenugha, expressed appreciation for the governor's action, noting that it provides a fresh opportunity for integration and positive community influence. Under his new role, the former native doctor is expected to use his platform and personal history to campaign against social vices and discourage youths from engaging in dangerous shortcuts to wealth.
