Why the Plot Against Peter Mbah Will Fail Before 2027

According to Jaja from ThisDay, as political activities ahead of the 2027 Nigerian general elections begin to gather momentum, some observers believe that attempts by opposition politicians to stop the re-election of Peter Mbah may not succeed.

Political watchers in Enugu State say the state’s political structure and zoning tradition could play a major role in determining the outcome of the next governorship election.

Recently, reports emerged that the chairman of the Governing Council of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Chinyeaka Ohaa, resigned from his position. His resignation attracted attention among political observers who follow developments in Enugu politics.

Ohaa had earlier shown interest in contesting for the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2023 election. However, during consultations with political stakeholders at the time, many leaders pointed out that the zoning arrangement in the state did not favour his ambition.

The zoning system in Enugu State was introduced in 1999 to ensure fairness and balance in the distribution of political power among the three senatorial districts. Under this arrangement, the governorship rotates among the districts.

The rotation started with Chimaroke Nnamani, who became governor from Enugu East Senatorial District in 1999. The arrangement has continued to guide political decisions in the state over the years.

Some political leaders also argued in 2022 that since Nkanu West Local Government Area had already produced a governor through Nnamani, it would be fair to allow another local government area in the district to produce the next governor.

Following consultations among political leaders and stakeholders, Peter Mbah, who is from Nkanu East Local Government Area, eventually emerged as the preferred candidate and later won the 2023 governorship election.

Several prominent politicians who had earlier shown interest in the position stepped aside after the consensus decision. Among them were former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, Senator Gilbert Nnaji, and businessman Evarest Nnaji.

Supporters of Governor Mbah believe that his administration’s development projects and reforms could strengthen his chances in the next election. They point to infrastructure projects, education initiatives, and efforts to improve revenue generation in the state.

The administration has also focused on projects such as the development of the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences and improvements in other sectors across the state.

Observers say that voters in Enugu often consider both performance and the zoning tradition when making political decisions. As a result, many believe that the next governorship election will largely depend on how residents assess the current administration’s performance.

As the political season gradually approaches, analysts say the 2027 election will test the strength of political alliances, party structures, and the popularity of candidates across the state. For now, the political landscape in Enugu continues to evolve as parties and aspirants prepare for the contest ahead.
