The widow of a late police inspector, Dr Paul Ikechukwu Obodo, has called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu, to order a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding her husband's death and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
Mrs Ngozi Isiwu-Obodo made the appeal during a telephone interview, describing the death of her husband as both painful and unresolved. She said the late officer, who held a Ph.D. and was from Nkpologu in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State, was attached to the Operations Department of the Enugu State Police Command before the tragic incident.
According to her, eyewitnesses reported that the inspector was on his way to work on the evening of July 5, 2026, when he was struck by a speeding convoy along the New Haven–Bisala Road at about 7:00 p.m.
She alleged that the vehicle did not stop after the collision, claiming it dragged the officer's body and his service rifle for some distance before leaving the scene.
Mrs Obodo said she is demanding justice for her late husband and urged the Inspector-General of Police to personally ensure that those behind the incident are identified and prosecuted.
The widow also expressed disappointment with the Enugu State Police Command, alleging that the family had not received any official visit or condolence message from the command since the incident occurred.
She described her husband as a committed and dedicated officer whose service to the Nigeria Police Force deserved honour, adding that the family's pain had been worsened by what she considered the command's handling of the matter.
Meanwhile, the Enugu State Police Command has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that the late inspector was killed by a police convoy.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the command described the reports as misleading and said there is currently no evidence linking any police convoy to the fatal hit-and-run accident.
Ndukwe stated that investigators are carrying out a full investigation into the incident and assured the public that more information would be released as findings emerge.
He noted that the death of the officer was a tragic loss and reaffirmed the command's commitment to conducting a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation to establish the actual circumstances surrounding the incident.
