The Nigeria Police Force has begun preparations for the security challenges that may come with the 2027 general elections. The police plan to develop a comprehensive security roadmap that will guide officers before, during and after the elections. The move is coming as political activities are gradually increasing across the country and concerns about election-related violence, voter intimidation, attacks on electoral officials and disruption of election materials remain important national issues. According to the Police Force, the new plan will focus on modern policing methods, intelligence gathering, technology and stronger cooperation between the police and communities. The development was announced as part of preparations for the sixth Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers, which is scheduled to hold from September 21 to 23, 2026, in Owerri, Imo State. The conference is expected to bring together senior police officers, security experts and other important stakeholders to examine emerging threats and develop practical solutions for protecting Nigerians during the 2027 elections.
One of the major areas the police want to improve is intelligence-led policing. This means that instead of waiting until violence or crime happens before responding, security agencies will use information to identify possible threats and act early. This approach can be very important during elections because political tensions can increase quickly, especially around campaign rallies, voting centres, collation centres and areas where political supporters have disagreements. The police say the conference will also focus on police-community partnerships, digital technology and artificial intelligence as tools that can improve election security. The idea is to make policing more proactive and better prepared for modern security challenges. According to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the conference will help develop practical measures to strengthen the police capacity to manage security before, during and after the 2027 polls.
The use of technology and artificial intelligence is particularly interesting because election security is becoming more complicated in the digital age. Social media can be used to spread information quickly, but it can also be used to circulate false information, incite violence or create unnecessary tension. Modern technology can help security agencies monitor threats, analyse information and respond more quickly, although such tools must be used responsibly and within the law. The proposed police roadmap is therefore expected to look beyond traditional methods of policing. It will consider how digital tools, intelligence gathering and modern communication systems can help officers protect voters and other people involved in the electoral process. However, technology alone cannot guarantee peaceful elections. It must be combined with professional policing, proper training, adequate equipment, respect for human rights and cooperation with citizens.
Another major concern is the protection of voters, electoral officials, candidates and election materials. During elections, police officers are expected to help create an environment where Nigerians can exercise their right to vote without fear or intimidation. Electoral materials must also be protected as they move from one location to another, while polling units and collation centres require appropriate security arrangements. The Police Force says the proposed strategies will focus specifically on protecting voters, electoral personnel, candidates, electoral materials and the general public. This is important because election security is not only about preventing major attacks. It also includes dealing with threats such as political thuggery, intimidation, clashes between supporters, destruction of property and other activities that could discourage people from participating in the electoral process. The police will therefore need to work closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission, political parties, community leaders and other security agencies.
The conference will mainly involve senior police officers of the rank of Commissioner of Police and above, alongside policing experts and other stakeholders. The event is being organised by the Nigeria Police Force in conjunction with Lenders Consult International, which has partnered with the police on the conference since 2019. The 2026 edition will be hosted by the Imo State Government and will take place in Owerri. According to the organisers, the conference has grown beyond a local meeting, with international participants also attending. The broader aim is to strengthen strategic leadership, professionalism and operational preparedness within the police as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections. The police have also indicated that preparations are already taking place at state level. For example, the Lagos State Police Command has been engaging with INEC on arrangements for protecting electoral personnel and materials ahead of the elections.
The decision to begin detailed security planning early is important because peaceful elections require preparation long before voters arrive at polling stations. Nigeria has experienced election-related violence and security challenges in previous election cycles, making proper planning necessary. The success of the 2027 security plan will depend not only on the police but also on the behaviour of political parties, candidates, supporters and citizens. Political leaders have a responsibility to discourage violence and respect democratic rules, while citizens should avoid spreading unverified information or participating in acts that could threaten public safety. The police, on their part, must remain professional, impartial and accountable while carrying out their duties. The new roadmap, if properly implemented, could help the country respond to emerging threats more effectively and create a safer environment for voters. As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 elections, the focus should remain on ensuring that every eligible citizen can participate freely and safely, while electoral officials can perform their duties without intimidation. The planned conference in Owerri is therefore an important step toward preparing the Nigeria Police Force for what could be one of the country’s most significant security operations in the coming election cycle.
