How to Buy Fuel via App and Serve Yourself at NNPC Stations

By Faith Eze

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has taken a major step forward in modernizing the country's downstream petroleum sector by introducing smart self-service fuel pumps at selected retail stations. This innovative system allows motorists to bypass the traditional queue and attendant method, giving them the freedom to pay for and dispense petrol completely on their own using a dedicated mobile application. The initiative marks a significant shift in how everyday drivers interact with fuel retail outlets in the country.

According to company officials, this rollout is part of a broader strategic plan to transform conventional filling stations into modern, efficient energy and mobility hubs. The leadership aims to deploy between 50 and 70 smart, self-service stations nationwide over the next six months. The inaugural rollout took place at a newly commissioned smart station located on Bill Clinton Drive along Airport Road in Abuja. Company executives emphasized that the technology is designed to streamline transactions, reduce wait times, and give customers complete transparency and control over the exact volume of fuel they purchase.

For motorists eager to try out the new system, NNPC Retail has outlined a clear, step-by-step procedure to guide users through the digital purchase and dispensing process:
  •  Download the official mobile application, known as the NRL Fuel App, from your device app store or via official download links provided on the company's verified social media handles.
  •  Register an account, set up your profile, and fund your in-app digital wallet, which serves as the primary payment method for your fuel transactions.
  •  Open the application, tap on the fuel purchase section, and select your preferred fuel type.
  •   Browse through the integrated station list to find a participating location. Because the rollout is gradual, this facility is currently restricted to specific outlets. Look closely for the green self-serve badge displayed next to the station name before making your selection.
  •  Input the exact amount of money you wish to spend on fuel. The app will automatically calculate and display the corresponding quantity and price. Review the details carefully and tap the pay from wallet option to complete the transaction.
  •   Once the payment goes through successfully, the app will instantly generate a digital receipt containing your unique order ID, an 8-digit self-service code, and a QR code.
  •   Drive up to the designated self-service pump terminal, type in your 8-digit self-service code on the keypad, and press the hash key to activate the machine.
  •  After the system validates your code, pick up the fuel nozzle and dispense petrol into your vehicle tank up to the exact amount you paid for.
This digital transformation brings a touch of international best practices to Nigeria's fuel retail space. By empowering customers to handle the fueling process themselves, the system aims to minimize human errors, reduce disputes over fuel quantities, and speed up service delivery at busy stations. As the rollout expands to more cities and stations across the country, motorists can expect a faster, more autonomous, and tech-driven fueling experience.
