Labour Party Set for Enugu North By-Election After INEC Corrects Omission

The Labour Party (LP) has welcomed the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to include the party and its candidate in the upcoming Enugu North Senatorial District by-election scheduled for June 20, 2026.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, LP noted that its name and candidate were initially absent from the list of political parties and candidates cleared by INEC to participate in the by-elections across the country.

According to the party, the exclusion occurred despite its compliance with all legal and constitutional requirements for participation in the election.

The statement explained that following engagements with INEC’s leadership, the issue was reviewed and corrected, leading to the official inclusion of the Labour Party and its candidate in the senatorial contest.

The party expressed satisfaction with the development, stating that it is fully prepared to contest the election and offer the people of Enugu North effective and people-oriented representation for the remainder of the current Senate term.

LP further commended INEC for addressing the matter, describing the action as a demonstration of the Commission’s willingness to respond to concerns and uphold confidence in the electoral process.

The party also appreciated its supporters, members, and stakeholders who sought clarification and showed concern over its earlier omission from the list, praising their loyalty and commitment.

As campaigns enter their final phase, the Labour Party wished all its candidates participating in the various by-elections across the country—including those in Enugu North, Nasarawa North, and Rivers South-East—success at the polls.

The party expressed optimism that the elections would strengthen democratic values and reinforce public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system while delivering positive outcomes for its candidates.
