The Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed allegations that the party, its leadership or Governor Peter Mbah’s administration sponsored an alleged attack in Nkanu West Local Government Area.
The party described the claims as politically motivated and without evidence, urging security agencies to carry out a thorough and impartial investigation to establish what happened.
The APC made its position known in a statement issued on Monday by its State Publicity Secretary, Chief Uche Obute (JP), in response to accusations from opposition political actors.
Party Denies Involvement in Alleged Attack
The ruling party in the state said it strongly rejected any attempt to associate it or the state government with political violence.
According to the APC, the allegations were inconsistent with what it described as the party’s democratic values and the administration’s commitment to peace and stability.
It maintained that political disagreements were part of democratic life but should be handled through responsible engagement, respect for the truth and compliance with the law.
The party also cautioned political actors against using an unfortunate incident to inflame tensions, damage reputations or undermine the peaceful atmosphere in Enugu.
APC Defends Governor Mbah’s Security Record
The APC said Governor Peter Mbah had consistently prioritised security, development and good governance since assuming office.
It argued that the governor’s legal background and responsibilities as the state’s chief executive underscored the importance of protecting lives and property.
The party questioned why the governor would be linked to an incident capable of threatening peace in Nkanu West, particularly given his ancestral and political ties to the area.
“As a son of Nkanu, the peace, security, development and wellbeing of the people remain matters of profound importance,” the APC said.
It urged the public and political stakeholders to focus on the governor’s actions and record in office rather than rely on what it described as unverified political claims.
Security Agencies Asked to Establish Facts
The APC called on law-enforcement authorities to investigate the reported incident and determine whether any individuals or groups were responsible for violence or criminal activity.
It stressed that anyone found culpable should face the full consequences of the law, regardless of political affiliation or social status.
The party said it had nothing to fear from a transparent investigation and reaffirmed its commitment to democracy, justice and the rule of law.
Party Appeals for Calm Ahead of Elections
The APC advised opposition parties and other political actors to avoid character assassination, misinformation, inflammatory statements and allegations not supported by established facts.
It also urged its members and supporters to remain peaceful and law-abiding.
The party called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders, youth organisations and civil society groups to support dialogue and peaceful coexistence in the state.
Reaffirming its backing for the Mbah administration’s development agenda, the APC said political differences should be resolved through lawful democratic processes rather than confrontation or violence.
