The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has successfully carried out the destruction of expired donated drugs and medical consumables valued at approximately N59 million in Rivers State. This critical public health exercise was conducted to ensure that compromised, substandard, or expired pharmaceutical products do not find their way back into the consumer market or local supply chains where they could endanger innocent citizens.

According to agency officials, the destroyed items consisted of various essential medicines, pharmaceutical products, and medical supplies that had surpassed their expiration dates. Many of these items were initially meant for charitable distribution or medical outreach programs but remained unused until they became unsafe for human consumption. Retaining or distributing such expired materials poses serious health dangers, ranging from treatment failure to severe toxic reactions and organ damage.

During the destruction exercise, which was carried out in line with environmental and safety standards, NAFDAC representatives emphasized the agency's unyielding commitment to safeguarding the health of Nigerians. The regulatory body continues to monitor warehousing facilities, ports of entry, and distribution networks across the country to track down and evacuate expired or unwholesome products. Officials noted that circulating expired medications undermine public trust and weaken the healthcare delivery system.

Furthermore, the agency used the platform to call on public-spirited organizations, healthcare providers, and donors to collaborate closely with regulatory authorities when handling medical donations. Proper inventory management and timely distribution channels are vital to ensure that medical supplies reach vulnerable populations while they are still potent and safe for use. Stakeholders were equally urged to report any suspicious pharmaceutical activities or expired stock inventories to the nearest NAFDAC office.

The successful disposal of these products reinforces the agency's proactive stance against unsafe drugs. Residents of Rivers State and the wider public have been assured that enforcement teams remain vigilant, dedicated, and fully equipped to maintain high standards of food and drug safety nationwide.
