Godwin Aliuna, the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) candidate for Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency, has stepped down from the 2027 House of Representatives election, citing peace and the wider interest of Ebonyi State.

Aliuna announced his withdrawal after consultations with constituents, political associates and key stakeholders across the state.

In a statement issued at the weekend, the politician said the decision was difficult, given his ambition to represent the people of Ebonyi/Ohaukwu at the National Assembly.

He, however, maintained that the collective interest of Ebonyians must take priority over personal political aspirations.

Why Aliuna Quit the Race

The former House of Representatives aspirant explained that his decision followed his assessment of the political situation in Ebonyi State and feedback received during his consultations.

He said political contests should promote development and unity rather than create division, bitterness or instability.

Although he expressed confidence in the DLA and its supporters’ ability to win the 2027 election, Aliuna said he chose to withdraw “for the sake of peace” and in recognition of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s peace-building efforts.

He added that his decision to leave the race would not end his commitment to the constituency.

According to him, his political ambition has always been driven by the desire to improve the lives of constituents through effective representation, legislation, empowerment and strategic development initiatives.

Areas He Wanted to Prioritise

Aliuna identified several areas he would have focused on if elected to the National Assembly.

They include road construction, improved infrastructure, rural connectivity and the provision of potable water through boreholes and other community-based projects.

He also listed agriculture, education and human capital development among the sectors requiring urgent attention.

The politician said investment in agriculture could help empower farmers, create employment, generate wealth and reduce poverty, particularly in rural communities.

He further expressed concern over unemployment, poverty and the economic difficulties facing families in Ebonyi/Ohaukwu.

Aliuna called for sustainable government interventions to equip young people with relevant skills, create employment opportunities and support those seeking to establish businesses.

Backs Nwifuru’s 2027 Governorship Bid

Following his withdrawal, Aliuna declared his support for Governor Francis Nwifuru’s bid for another term in office.

He said he would mobilise his supporters and loyalists across Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency to support the governor ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The former aspirant praised Nwifuru’s commitment to the interests of Ebonyians and urged him to strengthen efforts in delivering the dividends of democracy.

He specifically appealed to the governor to focus on employment, infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture and empowerment.

Aliuna also advised the governor to ensure that competence, accountability and performance remain key considerations in the appointment and supervision of aides and associates.

He warned that underperforming officials, including aides, associates and relatives whose conduct undermines government programmes, could damage the administration’s achievements and weaken the relationship between the government and the people.

Political Ambition Not Over, Says Aliuna

Addressing supporters who may be disappointed by his decision, Aliuna urged them to remain calm and hopeful.

He disclosed that he intends to use the period to regroup, strengthen his political structures and maintain engagement with constituents ahead of the 2031 general elections.

The politician thanked his supporters, constituents, political associates and other stakeholders for their backing, saying he remained grateful for the confidence they had placed in his aspiration.

He also appealed to Ebonyians to remain peaceful and united, insisting that his withdrawal was made in the interest of the state.

“Our journey continues, and with God Almighty, the future will provide us with an even greater opportunity to serve,” Aliuna said.

His decision marks a shift in the political contest for Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency as parties and aspirants position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
