A joint security patrol in Onitsha, Anambra State, has rescued a 16-year-old boy who was allegedly abducted in Enugu State and later abandoned near a security checkpoint.

The development was disclosed by the Anambra State Police Command, which said it had intensified efforts to track down those responsible for the alleged abduction.

The rescued teenager was identified as Favour Ayogu.

In a statement issued on Monday, September 14, 2026, the command’s spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the boy was intercepted during a joint security operation conducted the previous evening.

Boy Found Near Checkpoint in Onitsha

According to the police, the rescue took place at Ekene Junction along Oguta Road in Onitsha.

The command said members of a joint patrol team noticed the teenager after unidentified individuals reportedly dropped him from a black Toyota Highlander SUV close to the security checkpoint.

The operatives immediately intervened and secured the boy, preventing what the command described as the possibility of further harm.

Police said the individuals involved fled the scene, prompting the commencement of efforts to identify and apprehend them.

Police Intensify Search for Suspects

Ikenga said the command had increased surveillance and intelligence-led operations in a bid to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and locate the suspected abductors.

The police spokesperson explained that the operation was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security coordination and respond swiftly to threats within the state.

The command appealed to residents to provide useful information that could assist investigators in tracing the individuals involved.

Appeal to Locate Victim’s Family

The Anambra State Police Command also appealed for public assistance in reuniting Favour Ayogu with his family.

The boy is believed to be from Igboeze South Local Government Area of Enugu State, with Ibagwa-Aka also mentioned as an area where information about his family may be obtained.

Residents of the affected communities and members of the public who may know the teenager or his relatives were urged to contact the nearest police station or the Anambra State Police Command.

The police said the assistance of the public would be valuable in ensuring that the rescued boy is safely reunited with his family.

Investigations into the alleged abduction and efforts to apprehend the suspects are ongoing.
