Nigeria’s Super Falcons are determined to bounce back from their disappointing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final defeat to Cameroon as they prepare for a crucial World Cup playoff clash against South Africa on Thursday.
The Falcons suffered a 1-0 loss to Cameroon on Sunday, ending their hopes of winning the continental title for a record-extending 11th time.
The defeat also denied Nigeria an automatic qualification ticket for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which would have been secured by reaching the WAFCON semi-finals.
However, Nigeria still has an opportunity to qualify for the global tournament through the playoff route.
Their immediate challenge is South Africa. A victory over the Banyana Banyana will move the Falcons into the inter-confederation playoff, where they will face the winner of the Ghana and Ivory Coast encounter.
Madugu: We Have a Second Chance
Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has urged Nigerians to remain behind the team, promising that his players will give everything to secure qualification.
Madugu acknowledged the disappointment surrounding the Cameroon defeat but said the team now has another opportunity to make amends.
“We have a second chance and we will give it our all,” Madugu said.
The coach also referenced the disappointment Nigerians experienced after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the men’s World Cup, saying the Falcons are determined not to compound the frustration.
He apologised for the Cameroon loss and accepted responsibility for the team’s performance, while insisting that the players are fully aware of what is at stake against South Africa.
Oshoala Appeals for Support
Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala has equally called on Nigerians to continue supporting the team as they fight for their World Cup place.
Oshoala admitted that the players understand the disappointment caused by their early WAFCON exit but stressed that the World Cup qualification opportunity remains within their reach.
According to the experienced striker, the team needs the backing of Nigerian fans more than ever as they prepare for the decisive playoff.
She said the players are determined to put in a stronger performance against South Africa and give Nigerians something positive to celebrate.
Falcons Face Unfamiliar Qualification Route
Nigeria’s current position represents an unusual situation for the Super Falcons.
The team had never previously failed to progress beyond the quarter-final stage of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, and this is also the first time they are having to navigate the playoff route in their bid to reach the Women’s World Cup.
Victory over South Africa would take Nigeria into the first stage of the inter-confederation playoffs, where teams from other confederations, including Asia, South America and Oceania, will compete for the remaining World Cup places.
Should the Falcons successfully navigate that stage, they will advance to the final phase of the inter-confederation playoff tournament, where qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup will ultimately be decided.
With their continental campaign over, the Super Falcons now face a crucial test against South Africa, knowing that another defeat could bring their World Cup hopes to an end.
The message from Madugu and Oshoala is clear: the Falcons need to fight, and they need Nigerians behind them.
