Former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Enugu State, Uche Nnaji, has pledged to serve only one four-year term if elected governor in 2027.
Nnaji made the commitment on Friday during a reception held in his honour by PDP supporters and party stakeholders in Akpugo, Nkanu West Local Government Area.
The former minister said his decision was influenced by the zoning arrangement guiding the rotation of political power in the state. According to him, he would respect the arrangement and would not seek a second term after completing his first four years in office.
Nnaji said limiting his tenure to one term would allow him to focus entirely on governance and the implementation of his development plans rather than preparing for another election.
He also promised to adopt a “one-day, one-project” approach, under which his administration would regularly initiate and complete development projects across Enugu State.
The PDP candidate said his goal would be to leave office with a record of visible development, better living conditions and improved governance.
On taxation, Nnaji said he would review policies that place excessive financial pressure on residents and businesses. He argued that government should consider the economic realities facing the people when introducing or maintaining taxes.
He also expressed concern that high taxation could discourage investors from establishing businesses in Enugu, claiming that some prospective investors were considering neighbouring Anambra State because of concerns over the tax environment.
Nnaji promised that his administration, if elected, would be people-focused, transparent and guided by what he described as a strong sense of responsibility.
Meanwhile, PDP chieftain Basil Ani declared the party’s support for Nnaji’s governorship ambition. Ani described the former minister as more than a conventional political candidate, saying his growing support had developed into a broader movement.
Ani expressed confidence that the PDP could regain control of Enugu Government House in the 2027 election, insisting that the party remained a major political force in the state.
