Family, Associates Honour Late SDP Chairman, Ramsey Onyia

By Isaac Mission

Family members, friends, political associates and other well-wishers have continued to pay tribute to the late Ozo Ramsey Onyia, former chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Anambra and Enugu states.

Onyia, who died at the age of 79, served as the SDP chairman in Anambra State and later Enugu State between 1991 and 1993.

Tributes were shared during a thanksgiving service held at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Okwojo, Ngwo, in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, to celebrate his life and mark the successful completion of his burial ceremonies.

Those who spoke at the gathering described the late politician and community leader as a principled, humble and selfless man who devoted much of his life to his family, community and public service.

His eldest son, Ozo Fredrick Onyia, said his father was deeply committed to his people and believed strongly in hard work, fairness, justice and humility.

According to him, the late Onyia was a man who placed a high value on noble conduct and consistently encouraged those around him to remain humble.

Fredrick said he was honoured to continue the legacy his father left behind, acknowledging the responsibility that comes with stepping into the shoes of such a respected figure.

The deceased's fourth daughter, Dr Chizoba Ijioma, described her father as a loving and compassionate man who was always accessible to his children, members of the community and anyone who needed his assistance.

She said his greatest inheritance to the family was the good name he carefully built throughout his lifetime.

Ijioma added that she intended to preserve and extend her father's legacy by maintaining his values of kindness, selflessness and putting the needs of others before personal interests.

Also speaking, his first daughter, Pastor Ngozika Anochirimonye Agu, described Onyia as a remarkable father who provided guidance and support to his children at every stage of their lives.

She recalled his sacrificial nature, loyalty, kindness and commitment to his family, describing him as a father whose influence extended beyond his immediate household.

Agu also encouraged people to learn from her father's life and legacy, noting that a book documenting aspects of his experiences, work and journey had been produced.

She said such a record could provide valuable lessons on fatherhood, leadership, marriage and service to others.

While mourning the loss, she prayed for God's comfort and strength for the family as they come to terms with the death of their patriarch.

In his sermon at the thanksgiving service, Ven. Dr Pius Chukwu urged the congregation to continue trusting in God, stressing that God does not abandon those who place their faith in Him.

He said challenges faced in life could be overcome through steadfast faith and committed service to God.

Chukwu also commended the children of the late Onyia for their dedication to God and encouraged them to preserve the values, reputation, courage and spirit of service for which their father was known.

The service ended with renewed calls for the family and associates of the late SDP leader to sustain his legacy of integrity, service and commitment to the community.
