This truth has been beautifully illustrated by the inspiring journey of a Nigerian-born grandfather who has defied all conventional expectations to achieve academic excellence abroad. Chris Osagbaekhoe, a 68-year-old father of four and grandfather of 12, officially added his name to the league of high achievers by graduating with a prestigious first-class degree in Social Work from Goldsmiths, University of London. His remarkable achievement has since gone viral, capturing the hearts of thousands and serving as a powerful reminder that learning has no expiration date.
Born and raised in Nigeria before relocating to the United Kingdom, Chris lived a full life centred around family and personal responsibilities. However, his deep desire to understand human behaviour and help others prompted him to explore education later in life. Between 2013 and 2015, he completed foundational courses in psychology and counselling. Rather than stopping there or settling into a quiet retirement routine, he made the bold decision at the age of 64 to enroll as a mature student for a full undergraduate degree in social work.
Pursuing a rigorous academic program in one's sixties comes with its own unique set of obstacles, but Chris faced compounding physical challenges as well. He lives with a physical disability and experiences chronic pain because one of his legs is shorter than the other, a condition that places strain on his spinal cord and makes long-distance walking difficult. Navigating public transportation during heavy morning rush hours proved exhausting. Despite these physical hurdles, he maintained an optimistic outlook, relying on his faith, personal resilience, and strong support from his university tutors. The institution accommodated his needs by providing accessible parking options, which significantly eased his daily commute to the campus.
When asked about his core motivation, Chris explained that he wanted to be a voice for the voiceless and empower vulnerable members of society. Having experienced his own share of struggles with mobility and life transitions, he felt a profound sense of empathy toward people who feel sidelined or ignored by mainstream systems. His lived experiences shaped his perspective, transforming potential limitations into a powerful driving force. University faculty members, including his social work lecturers, praised his extraordinary courage, noting that his dedication embodied the truest values of social work, which include resilience, hope, and an unwavering belief in human potential.
The culmination of his hard work took place during a graduation ceremony held at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre in Westminster, where he proudly walked across the stage to receive his Bachelor of Arts degree. Surrounded by his wife, family members, and well-wishers, the moment was a joyous celebration of years of late-night studying, essay writing, and perseverance. Following the public spotlight, his phone has reportedly not stopped ringing as friends, community members, and distant admirers reach out to congratulate him on setting such an inspiring benchmark.
Looking ahead, Chris has no intentions of slowing down. His immediate priority is to secure employment as a qualified social worker so he can begin directly impacting lives within his community. Beyond traditional social work, he nurses ambitious dreams of establishing a community-based project or centre aimed at mentoring young people and helping steer them away from crime. Furthermore, as a talented multi-instrumentalist who plays the drums, keyboard, guitar, bass guitar, and trumpet, he hopes to blend his musical skills with youth outreach programs.
