Anambra NUJ Marks 35th Anniversary, Set to Celebrate Milestones and Honour Philanthropist

By Isaac Mission

The Anambra State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) is set to commemorate its 35th anniversary with a Press Week focused on the achievements and challenges confronting the journalism profession.

The council disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday by its chairman, Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, secretary, Okechukwu Onuegbu, and chairman of the Press Week committee, Francis Ekpone.

The organisers said the celebration would provide an opportunity for journalists in the state to assess the progress made by the union over the years while also examining some of the difficulties facing the media industry.

Among the dignitaries expected at the event are Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Charles Soludo, his deputy, Onyekachukwu Ibezim, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Somtochukwu Udeze, and the Chief Judge of the state, Onochie Anyachebelu.

The President of the NUJ, Alhassan Yahya, is also expected to participate in the anniversary activities.

NUJ plans outreach programmes

As part of the Press Week programme, the Anambra NUJ council said journalists would visit the Correctional Centre as well as homes for destitute persons and motherless children.

The union said the outreach activities were designed to extend support and draw attention to vulnerable members of society.

Nwabueze to receive Man of the Year award

A major highlight of the anniversary will be the presentation of the Man of the Year Award to Martin Nwabueze, founder and chairman of the Ichie Akubudike Foundation.

Nwabueze, an indigene of Umudioka in Dunukofia Local Government Area, was selected in recognition of his contributions to humanitarian causes and community development.

The award was previously presented in 2025 to Okey Ezeobi, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure.

The 35th anniversary celebration is expected to bring together journalists, government officials, professionals and other stakeholders to reflect on the role of the media and the journey of the NUJ in Anambra State.
