FIFA, CAF Suspend NFF Electoral Process as Nigerian Football Crisis Deepens
FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have suspended further steps in the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) electoral process as they prepare to visit Abuja to assess the growing crisis in Nigerian football.
The decision was contained in a letter dated September 7, 2026, from FIFA Chief Member Associations Officer Elkhan Mammadov to NFF Deputy General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme. FIFA and CAF said they are reviewing the legal, governance, administrative and electoral issues connected to the recent developments within the NFF.
The development means that the NFF electoral process remains on hold. The elective congress, which had been scheduled for September 27, 2026, in Lafia, Nasarawa State, will not proceed until FIFA and CAF complete their assessment and provide further direction.
Why FIFA and CAF Are Getting Involved
The intervention comes after a major leadership crisis at the NFF. NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the federation's Executive Committee recently resigned from their positions.
The resignations created uncertainty about the leadership and future direction of Nigerian football. The NFF had already suspended preparations for its September election and announced that a new electoral process would begin after comprehensive reforms in consultation with FIFA and CAF.
