INEC Presents Certificates of Return to Winners of Recent By-Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally presented Certificates of Return to candidates who emerged victorious in the June 20, 2026 by-elections conducted across Rivers, Enugu, Nasarawa, Ondo and Kano states.

The presentation ceremony was carried out on behalf of the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), by the Supervising National Commissioner for Rivers State, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu.

According to a statement shared by the electoral commission on its official X platform on Tuesday, the successful candidates were officially recognised as winners of their respective contests.

While addressing the elected officials, Agbamuche-Mbu congratulated them on their victories and reminded them of the responsibility that comes with public office. She urged them to remain committed to serving the interests of the people who elected them.

She emphasised that effective representation of constituents should remain their foremost priority throughout their tenure.

The National Commissioner also disclosed that Certificates of Return would soon be issued to the winner of the Zuru State Constituency election in Kebbi State and to the victor of the recently concluded Ekiti State governorship election.

The by-election results, announced by INEC on Sunday, largely favoured the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which secured victories in several of the contests and further strengthened its legislative presence. However, some of the elections attracted complaints and allegations relating to electoral malpractice, voter intimidation and violence.

Among the winners, APC candidate Ikeje Asogwa clinched victory in the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election, while Danladi Envulu-Anza emerged winner of the Nasarawa North Senatorial contest after polling 45,362 votes.

In Ondo State, APC candidate Dayo Faduyile won the Ondo South Senatorial by-election, while Rabiu Shuaibu secured victory for the party in the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency by-election in Kano State.

Similarly, Rabiu Garba Aiki of the APC was declared winner of the Zuru State Constituency by-election into the Kebbi State House of Assembly.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), however, retained the Rivers South-East Senatorial District seat through its candidate, Olaka Nwogu.

Meanwhile, in the Ekiti State governorship election, Governor Biodun Oyebanji secured a second term in office, becoming the first governor in the state's democratic history since 1999 to achieve consecutive re-election victories.
