MEDL Urges Customers to Prioritise Electrical Safety During Rainy Season

MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has called on residents and electricity consumers within its coverage area to adopt strict electrical safety practices as heavy rains continue across the region.

The company's Head of Communications, Emeka Ezeh, made the appeal on Monday in Enugu while addressing journalists amid recent incidents of heavy rainfall, windstorms and flooding experienced in different communities.

Ezeh advised residents to remain indoors or seek secure shelter whenever it rains, warning against standing beneath trees or staying near electricity poles, power lines and other electrical infrastructure during storms.

He explained that strong winds and heavy rainfall could bring down trees and electricity poles, leaving exposed or broken power lines that pose serious risks of electrocution and other fatal accidents.

The MEDL spokesperson also cautioned customers against touching electrical appliances, sockets, switches or other electrical fittings with wet hands. He stressed the importance of ensuring that electrical installations in homes and business premises are properly insulated and routinely inspected to prevent faults.

Parents and guardians were also encouraged to keep children away from electrical installations and other dangerous locations during the rainy season to minimise the risk of accidents.

In addition, Ezeh advised consumers to disconnect sensitive electrical appliances during thunderstorms to protect them from lightning-related power surges that could damage electronic devices.

He urged members of the public to promptly report electrical emergencies, including fallen poles, damaged transformers, snapped power lines and other hazardous installations, through the company's emergency line on 08150824301 or by contacting the Quick Response Team (QRT) via the Customer Call Centre on 02084700100 or 07074609958.

Reaffirming the company's commitment to customer safety, Ezeh said MEDL would continue implementing proactive measures to ensure the safe and reliable distribution of electricity throughout the rainy season.

He further appealed to customers to support the company's safety campaign by adhering to electrical safety guidelines and reporting any unsafe electrical conditions to help prevent avoidable incidents.
