Mbah’s Re-election Bid Faces Scrutiny Despite Development lec

By Isaac Mission

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah is widely regarded as one of the leading contenders ahead of the 2027 governorship election, with many pointing to his administration's extensive infrastructure projects and governance reforms as key achievements. Since assuming office in 2023, his government has embarked on road construction, Smart Green Schools, primary healthcare expansion, improved security infrastructure and economic initiatives that have earned endorsements from political leaders, traditional rulers and business groups.

Despite these accomplishments, political analysts believe the governor's path to re-election may not be without challenges. They argue that while visible development is important, voters are more concerned about how government policies have affected their daily lives amid rising living costs and economic hardship.

One issue attracting attention is Mbah's defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under which he won the 2023 election, to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Supporters see the move as a strategic decision that strengthens Enugu's relationship with the Federal Government and improves access to national opportunities. Critics, however, believe the governor will have to convince voters that the political switch serves the interests of the state rather than personal ambition.

Security has also emerged as a major concern following recent incidents of attacks and kidnappings in parts of the state, including the abduction of worshippers during a church service in Udi Local Government Area. Observers argue that maintaining peace and protecting rural communities will remain a major campaign issue as the election approaches.

Another area of debate is the government's revenue drive. While the administration insists that improved internally generated revenue is necessary to fund development, traders, landlords and business owners have expressed concerns over taxes and levies introduced by the state. Although some charges were later reviewed or suspended, critics insist the policies placed unnecessary pressure on residents.

Questions have also been raised about access to the governor by political stakeholders. Some party loyalists and grassroots supporters claim the governor has become less accessible since assuming office, a concern analysts say could affect political mobilisation if not addressed before the election.

The Smart Green Schools initiative remains one of the administration's flagship projects, but opposition voices have challenged the pace of completion and long-term sustainability. Similarly, the government's promise to restore regular pipe-borne water continues to attract public attention, with many residents hoping ongoing investments will translate into improved water supply before 2027.

Political observers also note that several prominent politicians from Enugu East Senatorial District have either declared interest or have been linked with governorship ambitions, a development that could create internal political competition if not carefully managed.

Despite these concerns, many believe Governor Mbah still enjoys significant advantages, including incumbency, visible infrastructure projects and support from influential stakeholders. However, analysts maintain that the outcome of the 2027 election will depend not only on completed projects but also on how effectively the administration addresses economic challenges, security concerns and public perception in the months ahead.
