Ex-ARFH President Prof Oladapo Ladipo Urges Federal Government to Increase Family Planning Funding to $50m

The former president of the Association for Reproductive and Family Health, Professor Oladapo Ladipo, has called on the Federal Government to significantly scale up financial investments toward reproductive health by allocating at least one dollar for every woman of reproductive age. According to the renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist, this targeted funding approach would raise the national family planning budget to approximately $50 million, a substantial and necessary upgrade from the current $3 million to $4 million range currently committed by authorities.

Speaking on the persistent gaps in maternal healthcare, Professor Ladipo emphasized that increasing domestic funding is crucial to addressing severe reproductive health inequalities and ensuring that modern contraceptives and essential medical commodities are readily available, particularly to underserved women in rural communities. He noted that inadequate financing contributes significantly to high maternal mortality ratios and limits the accessibility of crucial preventive health services across the country.

Furthermore, the public health expert advocated for sustainable demographic management, encouraging citizens to embrace qualitative reproduction by having only the number of children they can adequately cater for. He stressed that proper birth spacing and family planning act as powerful preventive tools that protect maternal health, reduce unwanted pregnancies, and improve overall household well-being.

Stakeholders in the health sector continue to echo the sentiment that robust supply chains and increased budgetary allocations are fundamental to achieving national health targets. As discussions surrounding population policy implementation progress, experts maintain that prioritizing reproductive health financing will play a central role in driving long-term human capital development and securing a healthier future for families nationwide.
