Obi, Kwankwaso Meet NDC Governorship Candidates Ahead of 2027 Elections

By Isaac Mission

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have met with the party’s governorship candidates from Bauchi, Sokoto and Borno states as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.

The meeting was held at Kwankwaso’s residence in Maitama, Abuja, and was attended by the party’s governorship candidates for the three states: Ibrahim Kashim of Bauchi, Dr Shamsu Aliyu of Sokoto and retired Admiral Sunusi Ibrahim of Borno.

According to the party, the engagement was designed to strengthen coordination between the national leadership and its candidates ahead of the elections.

In a statement issued on Monday, the NDC said its leaders used the meeting to review the preparedness of the governorship candidates and discuss strategies for the upcoming elections.

The discussions reportedly focused on coordinated campaign plans aimed at improving the party’s prospects of winning governorship and other elective positions across the states.

Several other party leaders attended the meeting, including Buba Galadima, Kebbi State Chairman Alhaji Mustapha Umar and Sokoto State Chairman Alhaji Bello Yabo.

The engagement forms part of the NDC’s broader efforts to strengthen its political structures and improve collaboration between its national and state-level leadership, particularly in the northern part of the country.

The party has continued to intensify its mobilisation and organisational activities as it positions itself for the 2027 elections and seeks to challenge the dominance of established political parties.

Obi and Kwankwaso emerged as the NDC’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates respectively following the party’s special convention held in Abuja in May 2026.

The latest meeting underscores the party’s focus on building a coordinated political structure and strengthening its candidates ahead of the 2027 polls.
