The Nigeria Police Force has officially clarified the recent statements made by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, regarding members of the public recording police officers with mobile phones. The clarification came after comments made by the police chief sparked widespread public discussions, legal debates, and media reports concerning citizens' rights to document the activities of law enforcement agents. According to the force leadership, the core message was heavily centered on the growing trend of turning everyday police encounters into casual entertainment and online comedy skits rather than an attempt to ban lawful public scrutiny.
The discussion initially drew attention when the Inspector-General spoke during an official meeting in Abuja with the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association. During the engagement, which aimed to address strained relationships between lawyers and security personnel, the IGP pointed out that constant filming by members of the public had become a source of concern for security operatives.
He explained that while accountability remains a priority, some citizens had begun recording officers outside of official operations, such as when personnel were relaxing or eating in public spaces. He described these specific instances as very demoralising for officers who spend long hours managing security in difficult environments.

Representatives of the force emphasized that the Inspector-General fully acknowledges that citizens have a right to record law enforcement agents who are performing their official duties in public spaces. Authorities noted that while video evidence can protect both citizens and officers during disputes, turning officers into subjects of mocking pranks or uncontextualized videos undermines the dignity of the uniform.

Some legal analysts argue that any form of discouragement regarding filming could infringe upon the constitutional freedoms granted to citizens to monitor public officials.
