POWA Honours Families of Late Police Officers in Enugu

The Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) in Enugu State has honoured the families of deceased police officers as part of activities to mark the International Women’s Day 2026.

During a ceremony held in Enugu, the association organized lectures on women’s health and also distributed food items such as bags of rice, tubers of yam, and other essential items to the wives of late police officers.

The commissioner of police in the state, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, declared the event open and congratulated police officers’ wives and women in general. He was represented at the event by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Hope Isiani.

Giwa described the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day, “Gift to Gain,” as timely and meaningful. According to him, giving to others helps to promote unity, compassion, and support within the police community and the wider society.

The Chairperson of POWA in the state and wife of the Commissioner of Police, represented by the Acting Chairperson Mrs. Sarah George Okwor, assured police officers’ wives that the association would continue to support them and help strengthen their families. She also said the association would continue to assist members who are in need.

She appreciated the National President of POWA, Oluwafunmilola Disu, for her continuous support and for making the nationwide International Women’s Day celebration successful.

As part of the event, medical experts from the police command’s medical services carried out free health checks for participants. They also delivered lectures on important health issues, including the prevention of cervical cancer and ways to manage stress.

In addition, Sylvia Abanah, the Chairperson of the League of Women Voters of Nigeria in Enugu State and a former chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in the state, also delivered a lecture based on the International Women’s Day theme.

During the program, more than 100 wives of deceased police officers received food items and other essential materials.

The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the Nigeria Police Force in Enugu and the leadership of POWA at both the state and national levels for their kindness and continued support.
