The game started in dramatic fashion, with Chelsea taking the lead just 31 seconds after kick-off. Cole Palmer played a clever pass to Joao Pedro, who calmly lifted the ball over Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno. The goal gave Chelsea an immediate advantage and was reported as the quickest goal in the opening round of fixtures in Premier League history.
A Fast Start From Chelsea
Chelsea's early goal showed what fans could expect from Alonso's team. The new manager appeared keen to see his players attack quickly and use the pace and creativity of his forwards. Joao Pedro was particularly effective in the attack, while Palmer looked much more confident after an injury-hit previous season.
Fulham, however, did not allow the early setback to destroy their confidence. The home side gradually grew into the game and found an equaliser in the 24th minute. Josh King beat Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez at his near post to make the score 1–1. The goal gave Fulham supporters renewed hope and showed that Chelsea's defensive problems had not completely disappeared.
Chelsea responded before the end of the first half. In the 41st minute, new signing Maxence Lacroix created an opportunity for Morgan Rogers. Rogers, who joined Chelsea for a reported club-record £117 million, finished the chance to put the visitors back in front. It was an impressive competitive debut for the England forward.
Cole Palmer Returns to His Best
One of the biggest positives for Chelsea was the performance of Cole Palmer. The England midfielder was involved in all three of Chelsea's goals and looked close to his best form.
Palmer provided the assist for Joao Pedro's opening goal before playing an important role in the build-up to Rogers' strike. Then, just four minutes into the second half, Palmer got his own name on the scoresheet.
Joao Pedro held the ball up and supplied Palmer, who calmly finished through Leno's legs to make it 3–1. His goal was an important moment because it gave Chelsea a two-goal cushion and rewarded the midfielder for his excellent overall performance.
Palmer later explained that he had worked extremely hard during the summer following his injury problems. His performance against Fulham will therefore be encouraging for both the player and Chelsea supporters, especially as the club begins a new era under Alonso.
Fulham Fight Back
Despite falling two goals behind, Fulham continued to fight. They reduced the deficit in the 54th minute when Gonzalo Garcia scored on his Premier League debut.
Garcia, who recently joined Fulham from Real Madrid, headed the ball into the net after Sanchez could only parry a shot from Timothy Castagne. The goal made the final stages of the match very tense, with Fulham believing they could still find an equaliser.
Fulham came close to making it 3–3 in the 78th minute. Antonee Robinson found himself with a good opportunity to beat Sanchez, but his attempt went wide. Chelsea survived the pressure and managed to hold on for the victory.
A Winning Start for Xabi Alonso
The victory was especially important for Xabi Alonso because it was his first competitive match as Chelsea manager. Alonso arrived at Stamford Bridge with expectations after making a strong reputation in management, and Chelsea supporters will hope he can build a successful team.
Interestingly, Alonso's first Premier League match as Chelsea manager came against Fulham boss Alvaro Arbeloa. The two coaches previously worked together as players and also have connections with Real Madrid. Arbeloa was also making his Premier League managerial debut.
For Alonso, getting three points immediately gives his new project a positive beginning. However, the match also showed that Chelsea still have work to do, especially defensively.
Chelsea's Defensive Concerns
While Chelsea's attacking performance was impressive, their defence and goalkeeping raised questions. Robert Sanchez conceded two goals and was criticised for his role in Fulham's first goal. The team also allowed Fulham to create several opportunities during the second half.
Reports have suggested that Chelsea could face competition for the goalkeeper position, with Mike Penders also in the squad. Alonso will need to improve Chelsea's defensive organisation if the club wants to compete consistently at the highest level.
Chelsea's midfield will also need greater control in difficult matches. The exciting attack can win games, but a strong Premier League team needs balance between attacking football and defensive stability.
What the Victory Means for Chelsea
The 3–2 win does not mean Chelsea have solved all their problems, but it gives the club an encouraging beginning under Alonso. The most important positive is the quality of the attacking players.
Joao Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer all scored, giving Chelsea a dangerous front three. Palmer's performance was particularly impressive, while Rogers showed why Chelsea invested heavily in bringing him to Stamford Bridge.
The team also showed character. Fulham equalised in the first half and later pulled the score back to 3–2, but Chelsea did enough to protect their lead and leave Craven Cottage with all three points.
A Promising New Chapter
Chelsea's victory over Fulham has created excitement around the beginning of the Xabi Alonso era. The team played attacking football, scored three goals and showed enough quality to win a difficult London derby.
At the same time, Alonso will understand that there is still plenty of work ahead. Chelsea must improve defensively, reduce individual mistakes and become more consistent if they want to challenge for major honours.
For now, however, Chelsea fans have every reason to be happy. A new manager has arrived, new players are making an impact, and Cole Palmer appears ready to play an important role again.
The 3–2 victory over Fulham was therefore more than just three points. It was the first sign of what Chelsea could become under Xabi Alonso. The season is still very young, but the exciting start has given supporters hope that a new and successful chapter may be beginning at Stamford Bridge.
