Renowned and award-winning Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has shared how the heartbreaking death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu, has completely changed her relationship with her home country. In a deeply emotional interview, she revealed that she no longer wishes to return to Nigeria.
The tragic incident happened when Nkanu, one of her twin sons, fell ill. After a fever did not improve with initial care, the family took him to a hospital in Lagos for a medical checkup and an MRI procedure. During this process, the young boy was given a sedative called propofol. Tragically, things went wrong, and the child suffered a cardiac arrest, passing away the very next day.
Adichie expressed the deep pain and shock of losing her child, recalling how a doctor later informed her that too much of the sedative had been given. Following the tragedy, the family raised serious concerns about medical negligence in Nigeria's healthcare system, sparking extensive public conversations, investigations, and a coroner's inquest.
Before this painful event, Nigeria was deeply tied to Adichie’s identity, writing career, and personal life. She and her husband regularly split their time between the United States and Nigeria, where their children would spend holidays. However, the profound grief of losing her son has altered those feelings entirely. She noted that while her relationship with the country is heavily strained, any future visits might only happen because her other children still feel a strong, happy connection to their roots.
