Brunei international Faiq Bolkiah is once again without a club after his contract with Thai side Ratchaburi FC came to an end.
The 28-year-old winger has attracted global attention throughout his football career not only because of his connection to Chelsea, but also because of his extraordinary family background.
Bolkiah is a nephew of Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and has frequently been described as the world's wealthiest footballer. Despite being born into one of the world's richest royal families, he has pursued a career in professional football rather than relying on his family's fortune.
Born in Los Angeles, Bolkiah began his football development in England with AFC Newbury before progressing through the academies of Southampton, Chelsea and Leicester City.
He also spent time on trial with Arsenal and Stoke City during his youth career. His education included a period at Bradford College, where reports have previously highlighted the substantial cost of attending the institution.
However, his lengthy development journey did not lead to a senior professional breakthrough in England. In 2020, he moved to Portugal and joined Maritimo, although his time there was largely spent with the club's youth setup.
He subsequently moved to Thailand, signing for Chonburi FC. Bolkiah made 32 appearances for the club and scored twice during his two-year spell.
The winger later joined Ratchaburi, where he remained for three years. He made 23 appearances and scored twice before leaving the club in 2026.
His wealth remains a major talking point
Bolkiah's football career has repeatedly been overshadowed by the enormous wealth associated with his family.
His uncle, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, has ruled Brunei since 1984 and is widely regarded as one of the world's wealthiest monarchs. The family's fortune is closely linked to Brunei's oil and natural gas resources.
The royal family's reported assets have included an enormous collection of luxury vehicles, with estimates putting the number of cars in their possession at around 7,000.
Their extravagant holdings have also reportedly included a heavily customised Boeing 747, along with valuable properties and investments in major cities including London, Paris and New York.
Despite having access to such wealth, Bolkiah has continued to pursue football.
Former teammate recalls humble personality
Ruben Sammut, a former Chelsea academy player who later became a scout for the club, previously shared his memories of training alongside Bolkiah.
According to Sammut, Bolkiah did not behave differently from the other academy players despite his royal background.
He recalled that teammates would occasionally joke about his status and question why someone from such a wealthy family needed to pursue football.
However, Sammut said it was clear that Bolkiah genuinely wanted to become a footballer and worked like the other young players around him.
With his spell at Ratchaburi now over, Bolkiah faces another career crossroads as he searches for his next club, while his unusual combination of royal heritage and football ambitions continues to make him one of the game's most intriguing figures.
