The Abia State Police Command has rescued a medical doctor who was abducted in the state and arrested four suspects allegedly linked to the kidnapping operation.

The Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, disclosed this on Friday in Umuahia while briefing journalists on the command’s security operations since he assumed office.

According to Afolabi, the doctor, Ikenna Ilo, was kidnapped on August 19, 2026, but was later rescued safely following intelligence-led operations by the police.

He explained that investigators were able to track the movement of the vehicle used in the incident towards Imo State, leading to cooperation between the Abia and Imo State police commands.

The commissioner said the operation also led to the arrest of four suspects believed to have played different roles in the crime.

Among those arrested is a Point of Sale operator who allegedly received ransom payments from the victim’s family. Other suspects were reportedly involved in removing a tracking device from the victim’s vehicle.

“Three other suspects who were involved in the dismantling of the tracker in the vehicle and the POS operators who received ransom are in our custody,” Afolabi said.

He added that investigators were working to identify and apprehend other members of the alleged criminal network.

The police commissioner said the command had recorded several other successes since his deployment to Abia, including the arrest of suspected criminals and the recovery of firearms, ammunition and stolen property.

He further disclosed that suspects had been apprehended in different parts of the state over alleged offences including defilement, vandalism and other criminal activities.

Afolabi assured residents that the command would continue to intensify intelligence gathering and coordinated operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and improving security across Abia State.
