Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central, has predicted that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso will remain a formidable force in Kano State ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Umeh, a leading figure in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), said Kwankwaso would be difficult for any candidate to defeat in Kano if the election is conducted transparently and without manipulation.
The senator made the statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he discussed the opposition party’s prospects and its preparations for the 2027 elections.
According to Umeh, Kwankwaso, who is the NDC’s vice-presidential candidate, enjoys significant political strength in Kano despite the activities of rival political groups.
He also disclosed that he has been working with Kwankwaso and other NDC leaders as the party seeks to establish itself as a strong opposition platform ahead of the polls.
Turning to Rivers State, Umeh said the political situation remained fluid and should not be regarded as settled months before voting begins.
He cited the reception received by the NDC governorship candidate in Rivers, Dumo Lulu-Briggs, during a recent engagement in Port Harcourt, as well as the political activities of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
While acknowledging the influence of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the political alliance associated with him, Umeh maintained that the eventual outcome in Rivers would depend on how effectively each political camp mobilises ahead of the election.
The senator warned against declaring winners prematurely, stressing that political fortunes could still change considerably before election day.
He argued that no candidate could confidently claim victory in any state where the electoral process is free, fair and credible.
Umeh consequently called on the relevant authorities to ensure that political parties and their candidates are allowed to campaign without intimidation, interference or suppression.
He said the credibility of the 2027 election would be determined largely by whether voters are given the freedom to make their choices without undue influence.
Peter Obi joined the NDC in May 2026 and was subsequently ratified as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
Umeh’s comments come amid increasing political realignments and growing competition among presidential contenders as parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.
