The entertainment world and millions of movie fans across Africa have been thrown into deep mourning following the death of legendary Nollywood actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, famously known as Olu Jacobs. The iconic actor passed away at the age of 84. His death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, who shared the heartbreaking news on behalf of the family, referring to his late father affectionately as the "Lion of Lufodo".
Olu Jacobs was widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of modern Nigerian cinema. Born on July 11, 1942, his journey into the arts began decades ago. He received formal professional training at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. Before returning to Nigeria to help shape what would become Nollywood, he built a remarkable acting career appearing in various British television shows and international films. His rich background in classical theatre and international television production gave him a unique depth and commanding screen presence that set him apart throughout his career.
Spanning over five decades, his career covered stage, television, and film.
He starred in more than 120 Nigerian movies, consistently portraying wise fathers, dignified elders, traditional rulers, and powerful political figures. His exceptional talent earned him numerous national and international awards, including the prestigious Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Actor in a Leading Role and the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards (AMVCA). Alongside his beloved wife and fellow veteran actress, Joke Silva, he also ran film production and training ventures that helped nurture generations of creative talents in Nigeria.
Following the official announcement of his passing, tributes began pouring in from all corners of the entertainment industry. Colleagues, younger actors, and public figures flooded social media to share their grief and celebrate a life well lived. Nollywood stars such as Funke Akindele, Ini Edo, Williams Uchemba, Mr Macaroni, and Broda Shaggi shared heartfelt messages online, describing him as a true icon, an absolute inspiration, and a mentor whose legacy will live on forever. Fans also took to social media to express their sorrow, remembering how his stellar performances defined their childhoods and enriched Nigerian culture.
In their statement, the family expressed gratitude to God for a life filled with impactful achievements and hard-fought victories. At the same time, they requested that bloggers, fans, and social media influencers respect their privacy during this difficult time of grief. Though the Lion of Lufodo has taken his final bow, Olu Jacobs leaves behind an unforgettable legacy that will continue to shine brightly through the history of African cinema and the hearts of millions who loved him.
